Illusions of Paradise

I found out about this ghost tour through an event that was posted on Facebook.  It was titled "Illusions of Paradise" and I found it on the "Mysteries of Honolulu" Facebook page.  It was about the Massie Trial.

In Hawaii many people do something called ghost hunting.  Since there is a lot of Hawaiian legends all over the islands this is what islanders do to get a little sense of adventure.  When I was in high school me and my friends used to drive around to different locations and tell stories on what happened there.  These stories included, the legend of the seven bridges, the faceless lady, Morgans corner, and more.  When we were younger, we used to drive all around because we had nothing better to do and look for some "ghosts."  If anyone here reads this share some of your stories below... I would love to hear your stories.

So that night when I saw the post I said we should go!  Not only do I like going on these things I run a fun little tour at my work place with the teens that I work with so it couldn't hurt going on these things.  Also what had caught my eye was it was about Joseph Kahahawai.  Katie really wanted to go because her sister is actually dating a Kahahawai.

I caught up on some reading to learn more about the case and was excited to get a little dose of history.  Long story short, Thalia Massie was a haole woman and the wife of a Navy officer.  She tried to frame a group of local boys and accused them of raping her.  However, there was no conclusive evidence to prove that the boys committed a crime.  When Joseph Kahahawai was being discharged he was kidnapped by Thalia's mother who, along with Thalia's husband and a group of friends, beat, shot and killed Joseph Kahahawai.  Following the murder, Thalia's mother and husband were put on trial and were found guilty of killing Joseph Kahahawai.  Shockingly, instead of being sent to prison, Thalia's mother and husband were sentenced to serve only one hour on an admiral's ship.  Basically a slap on the wrist and released.  There's a lot more to the story but that's the jist of it.

The tour was scheduled for Saturday August 17th.  We met at the state library and went to the court room where the trial had taken place.  Our guide, Lopaka explained exactly what happened in the court room.  Some people on the tour played characters, including the jurors in the case.  We all listened intently to the story.  In addition to the historical events, Lopaka told us about the supernatural happenings in the court room and the around the court house.  After taking pictures in the court room, we all piled into a bus and paid our respects to Joseph Kahahawai by visiting his grave stone.  When we got back to the court house, Lopaka took us on a tour around Iolani Palace.  He told stories about the palace and the haunted sites around the palace grounds.

This tour is probably the best tour on the island.  Lopaka does his research and I learned a lot that night.  It was definitely a good dose of supernatural and history all wrapped up into one.  So if you ever are interested in doing a ghost tour please check out his Facebook page.  He has taken over tours for the famous author Glen Grant.  If you don't know who this is and you live in Hawaii you should do some catching up.

I'm definitely going to go on more of these tours.  The next one is in September... Friday the 13th... see you guys there if you go!
